Windowing Guide

ClearView has a unique multi-window interface that, although it takes some getting used to, provides users with greater flexibility and control of their user interface.

Setting a Window's Symbol

There are two standard ways of setting the stock symbol for which a window is currently displaying information.

Typing

Left-Click on a window's caption bar to set it to be the active window. Type the symbol for your desired stock and press the "Enter" key. If you hit a key by accident, you may use the backspace key to correct it. If you enter a bad symbol name, the caption bar will inform you of your error with a "no_symbol" message:

Drag and Drop

All the windows in ClearView support having symbols dropped onto them. The Fundamentals, Grid Watch, Grid Query, and Market Scan windows all support dragging symbols from them. Additionally, if you have a web page or document open that will drag text, you may highlight the text and drag and drop the symbol from that application to a ClearView window.

Cascading

When cascading is enabled, setting the symbol in one window will result in all windows belonging to the view being set to the same symbol. This is useful when you want to view multiple analyses of the a stock at once – otherwise, you would have to type the symbol in each window. By default, cascading is enabled for new views, but if you wish to manually set the symbol for each window you can do this by disabling cascading.

To specify whether the windows in a view cascade their symbols to eachother, right-click the caption bar of any window belonging to the view and use the "Cascade" menu item. Checked means the setting the symbol for one will set it for the whole view, unchecked means that setting the symbol in a window only affects that one window.

Closing Windows

If you would like to close a specific window within ClearView, click on the X in that window's caption bar. If there is no X, it is because the window is Protected.

To specify whether the windows in a view are protected, right-click the caption bar of any window belonging to the view and use the "Protected" menu item. Checked means the windows are protected, unchecked means they're not.

Moving Windows

Windows within ClearView are moved differently than standard windows. Left-clicking a window's caption bar and dragging it around will result in the whole view to which the window belongs being dragged around. In order to move only one window, it's necessary to hold the "Control" key while left-clicking the caption bar and dragging a window.

Windows will "snap" to other windows in their view and also to the edges of the screen.

You may resize a windows by grabbing its border and dragging it to the desired size.

Maximizing a Window

To maximize an individual window to the full screen, double-click the window's caption bar.

To restore it to its previous size, double-click the window's caption bar again.

Opening New Windows

There are two different ways to open a new window. The first option is adding a window to a view, in which case it will be grouped with the other windows within the view and inherit group settings (protected, cascade, etc). The second option is to open an independent window that is not part of another view. Opening an independent window creates a new view, of which only the new window is a member. Subsequent windows may be added to this group using the first method. The procedure for each of these options is described below.

Adding Windows to a View

To add a window to a specific view, right-click the caption bar of any window belonging to the view. After "Clone", you will see a list of all the windows available for you to add to the view. Select the desired window type and a new window will be added to the current view. If cascade is on, the new window will receive the view's current symbol.

Adding Independent Windows

To add an independent window, right-click the ClearView system tray icon, select Windows, and choose the type of window you wish to add. A new window will be created and it will be the start of a new View.

Settings

Many windows have settings that will modify the look and feel of their information.

To access these settings, right click the caption bar of the window you wish to modify and select "Settings". If a window allows for the customization of its interface, a dialog will open and you may modify the window as you wish.

Cloning

If you have a window that you have modified at all (settings, size, etc) and you want another window exactly the same, right click the caption bar of the window you wish to duplicate and select "Clone".

The new window will be created and slightly offset from the original.
